ALPHARETTA, Ga. (Aug. 16, 2012) – ClosureTurf™, an Atlanta-based landfill closure systems provider, announced today that two landfills utilizing the ClosureTurf™ system were honored at this year’s Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) Excellence Awards held at the 2012 Wastecon event in National Harbor, Md. Aug. 14-16.
SWANA awarded landfill owner IESI, a Progressive Waste Company (TSX:BIN) (NYSE:BIN), a Gold Excellence Award for the Timber Ridge Landfill in Richwoods, Mo. in the Landfill Gas Control category. Through the use of the innovative ClosureTurf™ system, the landfill has been able to reduce gas systems costs, contain all odors and reduce on-going labor, maintenance efforts and costs. ClosureTurf™ is also used for the Seneca Landfill in Mars, Pa., which was awarded the Silver Excellence Award in the Landfill Gas Control category.
<em?“We are thrilled to have the ClosureTurf™ system recognized by SWANA as a leading solution for landfill gas control,” said Delaney Lewis, Director of Operations, ClosureTurf™. The fact that ClosureTurf™ can help turn what was once a negative, environmental impact into a commodity with economic and environmental benefits is very satisfying.”
ClosureTurf™ is composed of a UV-resistant, polyethylene grass laid over a 50-mil linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) structured drainage geomembrane. By integrating the final landfill cap and the Gas Collection Control Systems (GCCS) into one product, ClosureTurf™ has transformed the landfill closure process by reducing the time, cost and environmental impact associated with landfill closure. In addition to better odor control, ClosureTurf’s impermeable barrier captures 100 percent of the emissions while creating very little condensate, ultimately resulting in high-quality methane gas for fuel generation.
SWANA’s Excellence Awards Program identifies outstanding solid waste programs and facilities that advance the practice of environmentally and economically sound solid waste management. Exceptional programs are recognized through SWANA for their commitment to utilizing effective technologies and processes in system design and operations, advancing health and safety of the public and implementing successful public education and outreach programs.
